Exploring Food Access Between Florida A&M and FSU Case Study
Challenge
The client wanted to identify the differences in food insecurity between two prominent schools: Florida State University and Florida A&M University. Students from each university experienced drastically different food insecurity levels, impacting their academic success.
Action Steps
The first step was to collect data to identify differences between the two student populations, which involved designing and distributing a survey that gathered 300+ responses.
Once we collected the data, it was possible to identify key demographic differences between the two university populations—most notably differences in income, housing, and race-influenced food insecurity within Tallahassee, Florida.
Using the data visualization tool ArcGis, I mapped data for use in the final report.
Results
The client used this data to illustrate the disparity and consequent impacts of food insecurity between the two student populations. WFSU Public Media published the final report in their article “A Tale of Two Schools: Exploring Food Access Between FAMU and FSU.”
Using qualitative data from interviews and quantitative evidence from our food insecurity mapping, this report made the case for better access to food resources to ensure student success.
